A Deck in Unusable Yard Space

3

The Chattanooga/Northwest Georgia area is filled with beautiful mountains and hillsides.  Often “flat land” can be at a premium.  The deck above was constructed in an otherwise unusable backyard.

1 To access the deck, multi-tiered steps were constructed to lead the way to the 12′ x 24′ landing, putting to use a hillside that is directly behind the house.

The steps were designed not only for stability but to use the minimum amount of space while displaying rugged style.

2 The deck itself is made of five and a quarter decking from Yellow Wood.  The deck is as beautiful as the view from it.  To add a finishing touch as well as stability to the upper construction, the rails are 2″ x 6″ capped wood allowing a surface sufficient to sit a beverage during a family gathering.  To insure the view while providing safety, page wire (hog wire) was used between the deck posts.

4 The deck itself is built over a retaining wall and cantilevered to add floor space and stability without having to change the landscape.
